Lewis Family Farm
First farm in the nation
to be USDA Certified Grass (Forage) Fed
Nestled in the Champlain Valley of New York's Adirondack Mountains, Lewis Family Farm is home to the nation's first registered closed herd of USDA certified organic, 100% grass fed American Hereford beef cattle. Born and raised at LFF, the beef nurse for 6 to 8 months, graze exclusively on the Farm's mixed grasses, and consume no grain. Totaling 1,200 acres, the Farm rotates grains and grasses over ten years, winter wheat and other products are sold, and unimproved native grasses and preserved wetlands thrive to support a diverse and vibrant wildlife.
Lewis Family Farm beef live outdoors year round, inhabiting Farm woodlands in winter where they consume baled grasses, grazing certified organic pastures in summer. Bred from national champion stock, these beef cows grow slowly while maintaining high fertility rates. The Farm sells grains to organic mills, and surplus baled grasses to Amish farmers who come north from Pennsylvania and Virginia.
Complementing Farm beef is a 2000 tap sugar bush, a 120-tree apple orchard, a small vineyard, and bee hives, all organic.
